Institutional Sketch
The Cincinnati Reform Jewish High School, a supplementary school, was created in the summer of 1982 by members and rabbis of the four Reform congregations in Cincinnati in conjunction with the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. The school was incorporated as a non-profit charitable corporation in the State of Ohio on October 1, 1982, and its first session met on Sunday, October 3, 1982. Objectives of the organization included: "1. To provide Jewish Education primarily for the high school aged children of the Reform Jewish Congregations of Hamilton County, Ohio...2. To provide Jewish Education for any other persons not specifically mentioned in paragraph (1) above, 3. To have and exercise all rights and powers conferred, or which may hereafter be conferred, on charitable non-profit corporations under the laws of Ohio;..."
The founding rabbis were Alan D. Fuchs of Wise Temple, Solomon Greenberg of Valley Temple, Howard A. Simon of Rockdale Temple, Donald M. Splansky of Temple Sholom, Samuel Joseph of HUC-JIR and Gary Zola of HUC-JIR. The first president was Richard Snyder of Wise Temple, the first vice-president Gerald J. Korkin of Rockdale Temple, the first treasurer Howard Schumacher of Temple Sholom, and the first secretary Seymore Sokatch of Valley Temple. The first director was Michael Matuson, a rabbinic student at HUC-JIR.
The activities of the Cincinnati Reform Jewish High School are organized by a Board of Trustees that meets approximately once a month. The Board of Trustees is made up of representatives from each congregation who are selected by their congregation. School sessions are held on Sunday evenings and are divided into two periods. Students attend classes with their gradeĀa core class in the first period and an elective class in the second period. Special programs have included Kallah (weekend Judaica retreat), the Israel Education Project (sending students on Israel trips), and the Madrikhim Program (teaching students how to teach).
The school has received constant support from the four Reform congregations as well as the Jewish community. Since its inception, continued success has come to the school in educating the combined high school youths of Cincinnati's Reform congregations in the ways of liberal Judaism. It is one of the oldest schools of its kind in the United States and among the most successful.

The CINCINNATI REFORM JEWISH HIGH SCHOOL RECORDS consists of the organizational activities such as minutes, correspondence, syllabi, rosters, and publicity dating between 1982 and 2000.

SERIES A. ADMINISTRATIVE RECORDS (1982-1998) consists of one box of material. Folders are arranged alphabetically, and the material within each folder is arranged chronologically. Common types of material found in these records are agendas, minutes, school philosophies, and material relating to the Board of Trustees.
SERIES B. CLASSROOM PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES (1982-2000) consists of three boxes of material. Folders are arranged alphabetically, and the material within each folder is arranged chronologically. Common types of material found in these records are correspondence, course material, faculty material, and special programs.
