INSTITUTIONAL SKETCH top

The Board of Jewish Education of Greater New York is a conglomeration of several different Jewish groups that were founded in New York City beginning in 1910. Each group had essentially the same goal: to better educate the Jewish children of New York City. The earliest group was the Bureau of Education, which changed its name in 1917 to the Bureau of Jewish Education. Dr. Samson Benderly founded this group with the support of the Kehillah in 1910 in response to the Kaplan-Cronson report, which found that many Jewish children were not receiving any Jewish education, and those who were in Jewish schools were not being adequately trained. The Bureau of Jewish Education aimed to better organize and educate teachers and staff members in Jewish educational facilities, inform the Jewish parent about the status of Jewish education in New York City and encourage them to get involved to better the school systems and increase enrollment. Dr. Samson Benderly remained the head of the Bureau of Jewish Education until 1941. Sometime in 1940 or 1941 the Bureau of Jewish Education merged with the Jewish Education Committee of New York.

The Jewish Education Association was founded in 1920. The Jewish Education Association did not interfere with the schools autonomy and donated money through grants for things like tuition, record keeping, and school repairs and safety. In 1927 this group set up a board of license for Hebrew Teachers. In October of 1940 the Jewish Education Committee of New York absorbed the Jewish Education Association.

The Jewish Education Committee was originally formed in 1939 to administer a $1,000,000 donation by the Michael Friedsam Foundation for Jewish Education in New York City. Dr. Alexander Dushkin served as Executive Director and Israel Chipkin was his assistant. The Jewish Education Committee would continue to recruit children for the Jewish Schools, educate Jewish teachers, create programming for Jewish schools and help fund Jewish schools through grants and scholarships. They were responsible for things like World Over, a Children's magazine that helped explain world events and how they affected the Jewish Community, they created and maintained a library of Jewish Sources that teachers could access, and of course they donated money to schools thought grants like the demonstration grants to help create new programming for schools, and help underprivileged children be able to afford tuition for schools. In 1970 the Jewish Education Committee changed its name to its current name, The Board of Jewish Education of Greater New York.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE top

The Board of Jewish Education of Greater New York Records span the years 1920 through 1982 and trace the history of the group's activities educating Jewish youth in the New York City area. The records include minutes, correspondence, reports, newsletters, special projects files, nearprint and audio-visual materials. A major portion of the information on the institution comes from the administrator files of Alexander Dushkin, Azriel Eisenburg, Israel Chipkin, and Chaim Botwinick. The Records are arranged into 13 series as follows:

· A. MINUTES (1920-1985)
· B. ALEXANDER DUSHKIN CORRESPONDENCE FILES (1939-1949)
· C. ISRAEL S. CHIPKIN CORRESPONDENCE FILES (1934-1959)
· D. AZRIEL EISENBERG CORRESPONDENCE FILES (1934-1959)
· E. CHAIM BOTWINICK CORRESPONDENCE FILES (1946-1984)
· F. BULLETINS AND NEWSLETTERS (1927-1989)
· G. OUTREACH AND SPECIAL PROJECTS (1979-1982)
· H. ACCREDITATION (1951-1958)
· I. JEWISH ORIENTATION AND TRAINING SEMINARS (1940-1971)
· J. REPORTS AND SUMMARIES (1972-1975)
· K. STATISTICS AND TESTS (1950's)

· M. AUDIO VISUAL MATERIALS(1940's-1979)

SERIES A. (MINUTES), (1920-1985) is arranged by board or committee and then chronologically. The order of the minute records was maintained as in their numbered and labeled original binders. The minutes of the Jewish Education Association (JEA) Executive meetings run from November 1920 through 1940 and include the temporary committee of the JEA as well as the amalgamation of the JEA and the Jewish Education Committee (JEC). The minutes for the Jewish Education Committee (JEC) run from June 1939 through April 1968. The Board of Jewish Education (BJE) minutes run from September 1966 through June 1985 and include the amalgamation of the JEC and the BJE. There are also committee-meeting minutes for Ivriah (1926-1930), the Jewish Education Association Committee on Admissions (1923-1933), and the Board of Jewish Education Committee staff meeting minutes (1975-1982). The minutes are at times scattered and some dates and organizations are missing, including the Bureau of Jewish Education Minutes (the organization that was founded by Dr. Benderly).

SERIES B. (ALEXANDER DUSHKIN CORRESPONDENCE FILES), (1939-1949) is arranged alphabetically and contain correspondence between individuals and institutions. Dushkin served as Director for the Jewish Education Committee during the incorporation of the JEA and the JEC. He served as Executive Director from 1941-1943, Executive Vice President from 1946-1949, and he also served as the editor for the publication Jewish Education.

SERIES C. (ISRAEL S CHIPKIN CORRESPONDENCE FILES), (1934-1959) is arranged alphabetically. The files contain Chipkin's correspondence with both individuals and institutions. Chipkin served as Educational Director for the JEA and the JEC. He also served as associate director under Dr. Dushkin and appears to have been a President of the JEC at some point. However, because Chipkin rarely assigned a title with his signature on correspondence it is hard to get an exact date on when he served in these capacities.

SERIES D. (AZRIEL EISENBURG CORRESPONDENCE FILES), (1934-1959) is arranged alphabetically and contain Dr. Eisenburg's correspondence with institutions as well individuals. Eisenberg served as Director of the Jewish Education Committee. He also served as founder and chairman of the United Synagogue Commission on Jewish Education and as President of the National Council of Jewish Education. Dr. Eisenburg also published a number of books including, Witness to the Holocaust published in 1981.

SERIES E. (CHAIM BOTWINICK CORRESPONDENCE FILES), (1946-1984) is arranged alphabetically and contain information relating to the National Study on Education to Jewish Schools including correspondence and questionnaires relating to the study.

SERIES F. (BULLETINS AND NEWSLETTERS), (1927-1989) is arranged by publication name and date. Bulletins and newsletters include The Jewish Education Committee Bulletin (1949-1971), The Principal (1956-1977), Headline Parade (1945-1958), The Nation's School (1988-1989), the World Over Playhouse (1947- 1948, and the Jewish Home Institute activity cards and guides (1927-1936-sporadic).

SERIES G. OUTREACH AND SPECIAL PROJECT (1979-1982) files are arranged alphabetically. The files contain correspondence and applications for demonstration grants in a variety of categories from special education to educational media projects. Grants were given to individual teachers or schools to use to either create new programming, continue current programming, repair or expand schools, or for teachers to continue their training in areas of Jewish Education.

SERIES H. ACCREDITATION (1951-1958) files are arranged alphabetically and include correspondence and information on accreditation activities. Most of the information comes from the Associated United Synagogue Schools in Queens and the United Synagogues of America.

SERIES I. JEWISH ORIENTATION AND TRAINING SEMINAR (1940-1971) files are arranged first by seminar and then by supporting materials. Files contain correspondence and transcripts from seminars held between 1940 and 1974 to educate teachers and lay leaders in the area of Jewish Education. Upon completion, a certificate from the Jewish Education Committee was issued to the trainee.

SERIES J. REPORTS AND SUMMARIES (1972-1975) files are arranged alphabetically and contain information about the Board of Jewish Education grants to provide transportation for students, fund school repair, or to pay tuition fees for students from lower income families.

SERIES K. STATISTICS AND TESTS (1950's) files contain correspondence, sample tests, as well as actual tests and results from survey achievement tests. Students were tested on their knowledge of the Bible, Jewish History, and Hebrew. The fiscal charts in the series measure how similar schools were affected by the “socio-economic” impact of its community. They examined the number enrolled, tuition intake, donations and fundraising, teacher and personnel salaries, and miscellaneous schools.

SERIES L. NEARPRINT (1920's-1980's) files are arranged alphabetically by title and contain samples of publications, pamphlets, cards, letters, activity books, and other educational materials that were generated by Jewish Education Association, Jewish Education Committee, and Board of Jewish Education of New York. Files contained in boxes 112-117 are written in Hebrew. Boxes 118-120 contain miscellaneous near print files

SERIES M. AUDIO VISUAL MATERIALS (1940's-1979) are arranged by type, then alphabetically and contain phonograph records, filmstrips, audio tapes, and support materials that were created by the Jewish Education Committee and Board of Jewish Education to enhance their education programs. Most of the topics for these filmstrips and phonograph records are Jewish holidays and Jewish history.
