The Jewish Federation of Cincinnati traces its roots to the formation of the United Jewish Charities in 1896 from ten other Cincinnati based Jewish agencies. In 1910 United Jewish Charities raised over $117,000, which was the highest per capita contribution of any Jewish community in the United States.
By 1921 the board voted to change the name of the organization from United Jewish Charities to United Jewish Social Agencies. By taking this action, the organization believed that their new name would better describe the preventative and rehabilitative nature of its work and that they could better serve the community by aiding individuals who would not accept charity, but would accept social aid.In 1958 United Jewish Social Agencies merged with Federation of Jewish and Associated Jewish Agencies, and the surviving organization kept the name Associated Jewish Agencies of Cincinnati. The three groups merged together so as to create a more streamlined operation and to reduce overhead expenditures, ultimately meaning that more money could be given to Cincinnati Jewish agencies.
In 1967 the organization went through a final major reorganization, as the Associated Jewish Agencies merged with the Jewish Welfare Fund to form the newly named Jewish Federation of Cincinnati. After this merge, the Jewish Federation became the organization for fund-raising and social planning for the Jewish community in Cincinnati.
Today the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati annually raises millions of dollars from the Cincinnati community, making up an important part of the nearly one billion dollars raised annually by the more than one hundred and eighty Jewish Federations of the North American based United Jewish Communities. The money raised by the Cincinnati Federation currently helps to support over thirty-four local Jewish agencies as well as organizations that serve the needs of Israel and World Jewry.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
The Jewish Federation of Cincinnati Records consist of documents relating to the operation of the federation’s business, as well as material on some of its member agencies. The Jewish Federation of Cincinnati has been in operation since 1896, and the earliest records found in the collection date to 1904.
For most of its existence the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati has served as an umbrella organization for other local Jewish groups. As a result, many of the records found in the collection focus on the interaction between the federation and these member agencies, and the majority of that interaction concerns financial requests. As expected with an organization such as the federation, most of the records found in the collection cover information on governing boards, fund-raising, and the allocation of those funds. All three of these subjects contain records dating back to at least the 1930s.
Outside of these subjects, the bulk of the records are from between 1960 and 1990. Some of the other topics covered by the records include organization information on the federation, Camp Livingston, Jewish Russian refugee resettlement, and social work projects in the Cincinnati community.

I. PHOTOGRAPHS & SCRAPBOOKSSERIES A. GOVERNING BOARDS. The governing boards series consists of eighteen Hollinger boxes. The series consist of meeting minutes and supplemental materials from the various governing boards of United Jewish Charities, Jewish Community Council, Federation of Jewish Agencies, United Jewish Social Agencies, Associated Jewish Agencies, and Jewish Federation of Cincinnati. The series is arranged chronologically. Span dates are 1904-1907, 1917-2000.
SERIES B. ALLOCATIONS. The allocations series is located in ten Hollinger boxes. The series details how the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati distributed its funds to various Jewish local, national, and international agencies. The bulk of the information in this series does focus on the allocations given to local member agencies of the federation. All allocation and budget folders in this series contain information on the allocation of federation funds to specific member agencies for the respective year(s). The series is arranged chronologically. Span dates are 1938-1998, 2005.
SERIES C. COMMITTEES & COUNCILS. The committees and councils series is located in five Hollinger boxes. The majority of the committees and councils records are from 1970 through 2003, and often only consist of meeting minutes. The series is arranged alphabetically by committee name, and then chronologically. Span dates are 1923-1993.
SERIES D. ORGANIZATIONAL MATERIALS. The organizational materials series is located in three Hollinger boxes and consists organizational materials and committee rosters. Of interest in this series are the general organizational materials (1996-2000) that supplies information on the current federation structure and goals. The series is arranged into organizational materials, and then committee rosters. Span dates are 1943-2000.
SERIES E. FUND-RAISING. The fund-raising series consists of sixteen Hollinger boxes and is divided into two sub-series: I. Campaigns and II. Community Chest. The bulk of information in the series relates to the annual Jewish Welfare Fund drive. Specifically, the campaign diaries, men’s division, and women’s division files all include campaign committee rosters, minutes, relevant correspondence, as well as other materials relation to the respective campaigns. Of interest are campaign materials from moments of historical significance for Israel, such as the Yom Kippur War (1973). The campaigns sub-series consists of various campaign divisions records and campaign promotional material, both arranged chronologically. The Community Chest series is also arranged chronologically. Span dates are 1935-1994.
SERIES F. CAMP LIVINGSTON/JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER. The Camp Livingston/Jewish Community Center series is found in three Hollinger boxes. Camp Livingston is a Jewish summer camp that has served the Cincinnati community since 1920. Since the mid 1960s Camp Livingston faced many financial struggles, and as a directed consequence the camp worked various other local agencies in an effort to overcome these challenges. As a result, when appropriate, the records in this series have been arranged by the originating group for those records, (i.e. Camp Livingston - Jewish Community Center are records about Camp Livingston from the Cincinnati Jewish Community Center). Other information in the series includes: records on Camp Livingston fire of 1992, promotional materials, and reports on the status of the camp. Span dates are 1957-2000.
SERIES G. PROJECTS & PROGRAMS. The projects and programs series is found in two Hollinger boxes. Included in the series are records on: Jewish population distribution in Cincinnati in 1969, missions through the federation, “mini-bios” on Jewish Russian refugees, and an Israeli neighborhood revitalization program. The series is arranged alphabetically by project name, and then chronologically. Span dates are 1969-1993.
SERIES H. NEAR PRINT. The near print series is located in two Hollinger boxes and consist of reports authored by the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati or one of its member agencies. The records found in the series offer information on the Cincinnati Jewish community and social work efforts by Jewish aid groups. The series is arranged chronologically. Span dates are 1947-1988.
SERIES I. PHOTOGRAPHS & SCRAPBOOKS. The photographs and scrapbooks series is located in four Hollinger boxes. The bulk of the photographs are from Jewish Welfare Fund campaign events, and are 8" x 10" black and white prints identified by a photo index included in each folder. Also included in the series are a 1939 scrapbook and a box of miscellaneous photographs with limited identification and some organization. The series is arranged chronologically. Span dates are 1939-1971.
