Biographical Sketch

A native of McKeesport, Pennsylvania, Joseph Levine was born in 1909 to an Orthodox rabbi and was the youngest of thirteen children. Beginning his career at Temple Emanu-El in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, he served Mount Sinai Congregation in Texarkana, Texas, from 1958 until his retirement in 1981. During the 1960s and 1970s, he would travel to Beth Israel in El Dorado, Arkansas once a month to lead services, conduct Torah study, and teach religious school.

A well-known speaker and a lover of history, Levine was much-beloved by the greater Texarkana community. He was given a prolonged standing ovation after a talk to the Texarkana American Legion Post in 1971, for example, and after his death, the Greater Texarkana Ministerial Alliance honored him by dedicating its 1981 Brotherhood Service Award to his memory.
