Biographical Sketch
Lester Walter Roubey was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1915. He received a Master of Arts degree and his Doctorate from Johns Hopkins University in 1936 and 1938 respectively. He stayed at Johns Hopkins University as a post-Doctoral scholar until he entered Hebrew Union College in 1942. He was ordained there in 1947 and then took a pulpit at Temple Shaarai Shomayim in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where he stayed until 1953. Roubey served as rabbi briefly at Temple Mizpah, in Chicago, Illinois before moving to Temple Oheb Sholom in Reading Pennsylvania in 1954. While occupying his pulpit in Reading, he was also, from 1961-64, part-time Associate Professor of French at Kutztown State College.
After serving in East Orange, New Jersey, from 1964-1966, he accepted an invitation to the pulpit of Temple B'nai Israel in Baton Rouge Louisiana, in 1966. After coming to Baton Rouge, he was also a member of the teaching staff of the Department of Foreign Languages at the Louisiana State University, where he was an Associate professor of French and Italian literature.
Scope and Content Note
This collection consists of correspondence, sermons, class materials, and academic writings that provide a picture of both Roubey’s rabbinical career and his academic career as an instructor in French and Italian literature. Sermons are organized chronologically, starting with his time as a student at Hebrew Union College through the various pulpits he held throughout his career. Class materials are organized by subject, either French literature or Italian. Also included are academic papers and theses written throughout Roubey's academic career.

This collection is open to all users. The original manuscript collection is available in the Barrows-Loebelson Reading Room of the Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives.
