U.S. Food Administration WW I poster in Yiddish, Charles Edward Chambers, 1917.
Food Will Win The War!
At a time when a large percentage of Americans were immigrants, or the children of immigrants, it was important that messages could reach them in a language they understood. A Yiddish language poster from the U.S. Food Administration (1918) appeals to one section of these immigrants. The text reads in part: Food Will Win The War! You came here seeking freedom, now you must help preserve. We must provide the Allies with wheat! Let Nothing Go To Waste! (In addition to Yiddish the poster was published in English and several other European languages.)
