Passover Haggadah from the Korean War, 1952.
Jewish Holiday Observance in War
As in previous conflicts, American Jews serving during the Korean War (1950-1953) faced the challenge of how to observe the Jewish holidays. In 1952 two Jewish chaplains, Rabbi Herbert Chanan Brichto (1925-1996) and Rabbi Harry Z. Scheiner (1912-1970) created a Passover Haggadah. The Haggadah is used for the Passover seder, the mealtime service in which Jews recount the telling of the Exodus from Egypt. The cover of this Haggadah contains the symbol of the chaplaincy along with drawings representing the divisions of the armed forces that sponsored the celebration.
