The Pledge for Jewish Pacifists, with Abraham Cronbach's written comments across the top.
Rabbi Abraham Cronbach (1882-1965), Professor of Social Studies at Hebrew Union College, became an ardent pacifist as a result of the bloodshed during World War I. Cronbach arduously worked for pacifist causes throughout his career, helping to found the Peace Heroes Memorial Society in 1923. In January 1924, Cronbach sought to establish a specifically Jewish pacifist organization. A Pledge for Jewish Pacifists was mailed to a number of Cronbach's rabbinic colleagues, at least 15 of whom signed it. A similar number of rabbis, such as David Philipson of Cincinnati's K.K. Bene Israel, refused to sign.
