Letter from Louis Brandeis to Rabbi Max Heller of New Orleans, September 15, 1915.
Brandeis of Boston
Although most famous as the first American Jew to be named to the U.S. Supreme Court, Louis Brandeis (1856-1941) was also active in the Zionist movement during World War I when hundreds of thousands of East European Jews were caught in the war zone. He served as Chairperson of the Provisional Executive Committee for General Zionist Affairs and worked to expand membership in the American Zionist Organization, especially in the American south. This letter, to Rabbi Max Heller (1860-1929) of New Orleans, puts forth a preliminary plan for a campaign in southern cities.
