Rosalyn Yalow (1921- ), a medical physicist, won the Noble Prize in Physiology/Medicine in 1977. Yalow and her research partner, Dr. Solomon Bersen, created Radio-immuno-assay (RIA). RIA is used to screen blood for hepatitis virus in blood banks, detect foreign substances in the blood, determine effective dosage levels of drugs and antibiotics, and treat and detect hormone-related health problems.
