John Foster Carr, Guide to the United States for the Jewish Immigrant, 1912.
Guide to the United States
John Foster Carr (1869-1939) was the Founder and Director of the Immigrant Publication Society in New York from 1910-1930. His Guide to the United States for the Jewish Immigrant served as an instruction manual and travel guide for the new immigrant, whom he urged to settle away from New York. From the opening preface, "Thousands of immigrants have found employment, land, homes in the state of Connecticut. Many of them come from distant lands and speak no English. To help them become Americans and citizens of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Connecticut have opened night schools and classes in English, as well as free reading rooms, with books and papers in foreign languages....the Society has prepared the present guide to help the immigrant adjust himself quickly to the living conditions and social customs of the United States of America." There was also a Yiddish edition which included a map of the U.S., with all states, cities, rivers and mountain ranges translated into Yiddish.
