David Philipson to Abraham Cronbach, Cincinnati, Ohio, January 15, 1924.
A transcription of David Philipson's refusal
January 15, 1924. Dr. Abraham Cronbach, Hebrew Union College, Cincinnati, Ohio. Dear Dr. Cronbach:- I regret extremely that I cannot join your new society. I do not believe in non-resistance to evil. I believe with all my heart that evil should be fought with whatever legitimate means in our power. As I understand Judaism, it has never preached the doctrine of non-resistance. Jewish individuals may have done so but in this they were individual. Of course I subscribed to a number of the paragraphs in your pledge, with all my heart, but I cannot join the organization, whose governing idea is non-resistance to evil. With cordial regards I am Sincerely yours, David Philipson
