Yiddish Map of the U.S.
Books for Travelers to America
Between 1840 and 1860, the Jewish population of the U.S. ballooned from 15,000 to 150,000, and Jews from German lands immigrated to the U.S. in the tens-of-thousands. Political unrest and economic hardship were the primary motivating factors. This map of the US, published by the Immigrant Publication Society in New York, was labeled in English and Yiddish to help make the move across the ocean easier for the largely Yiddish-speaking immigrants. The map was included in the Yiddish version of the "Guide to the U.S. for the Jewish Immigrant," which was only later translated into English.
