Abraham Krotoshinsky (? -1953)
Saving the "Lost Battalion"
Private Abraham Krotoshinsky was a member of the 307th and 308th regiments of the 77th Division of the American forces during World War I. His regiments are largely known as the "Lost Battalion" because on November 2, 1918 his unit was led into a trap and surrounded by German forces in a forest in France, and they lost contact with the rest of the American forces. After five days, when hope was seemingly lost, Krotoshinsky volunteered to sneak through the German machine gun lines that surrounded them and make contact with outside troops for help. He was successful and led other American forces to save his regiments. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his bravery.
