The Lucky Bag 1922: The Annual of the Regiment of Midshipmen, United States Naval Academy, edited by the Class of 1922.
A Shameful Incident at Annapolis
The Naval Academy class of 1922 included at least three Jews, among them Hyman G. Rickover, the father of the nuclear navy. One of the other Jewish cadets, Leonard Kaplan, was the victim of an antisemitic prank in The Lucky Bag, the Naval Academy's yearbook. Each page of the yearbook contained photographs of two cadets who were roommates along with short biographical entries. Kaplan, who had no roommate, had apparently run afoul of the yearbook's editor who placed an antisemitic caricature as the second photo. The biographical entries were also antisemitic as well as anti-Irish. As a final insult, Kaplan's page did not have a page number and the page itself was perforated. Anyone who wished could, therefore, remove Kaplan's page.
